Indraprastha Gas Limited's (NSE:IGL) Stock Has Shown Weakness Lately But Financial Prospects Look Decent: Is The Market Wrong?
Indraprastha Gas (NSE:IGL) has had a rough three months with its share price down 14%. However, stock prices are usually driven by a company’s financials over the long term, which in this case look pretty respectable. In this article, we decided to focus on Indraprastha Gas' ROE.
Return on Equity or ROE is a test of how effectively a company is growing its value and managing investors’ money. Put another way, it reveals the company's success at turning shareholder investments into profits.
How Do You Calculate Return On Equity?
The formula for ROE is:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Indraprastha Gas is:
14% = ₹16b ÷ ₹112b (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2025).
The 'return' is the amount earned after tax over the last twelve months. Another way to think of that is that for every ₹1 worth of equity, the company was able to earn ₹0.14 in profit.

What Is The Relationship Between ROE And Earnings Growth?
Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. Depending on how much of these profits the company reinvests or "retains", and how effectively it does so, we are then able to assess a company’s earnings growth potential. Assuming all else is equal, companies that have both a higher return on equity and higher profit retention are usually the ones that have a higher growth rate when compared to companies that don't have the same features.
Indraprastha Gas' Earnings Growth And 14% ROE
At first glance, Indraprastha Gas' ROE doesn't look very promising. Yet, a closer study shows that the company's ROE is similar to the industry average of 13%. On the other hand, Indraprastha Gas reported a moderate 8.1% net income growth over the past five years. Considering the moderately low ROE, it is quite possible that there might be some other aspects that are positively influencing the company's earnings growth. For example, it is possible that the company's management has made some good strategic decisions, or that the company has a low payout ratio.
We then performed a comparison between Indraprastha Gas' net income growth with the industry, which revealed that the company's growth is similar to the average industry growth of 6.8% in the same 5-year period.
Earnings growth is a huge factor in stock valuation. What investors need to determine next is if the expected earnings growth, or the lack of it, is already built into the share price. This then helps them determine if the stock is placed for a bright or bleak future. One good indicator of expected earnings growth is the P/E ratio which determines the price the market is willing to pay for a stock based on its earnings prospects. So, you may want to check if Indraprastha Gas is trading on a high P/E or a low P/E, relative to its industry.
Is Indraprastha Gas Using Its Retained Earnings Effectively?
Indraprastha Gas has a healthy combination of a moderate three-year median payout ratio of 42% (or a retention ratio of 58%) and a respectable amount of growth in earnings as we saw above, meaning that the company has been making efficient use of its profits.
Moreover, Indraprastha Gas is determined to keep sharing its profits with shareholders which we infer from its long history of paying a dividend for at least ten years. Based on the latest analysts' estimates, we found that the company's future payout ratio over the next three years is expected to hold steady at 38%. Accordingly, forecasts suggest that Indraprastha Gas' future ROE will be 16% which is again, similar to the current ROE.
Conclusion
On the whole, we do feel that Indraprastha Gas has some positive attributes. With a high rate of reinvestment, albeit at a low ROE, the company has managed to see a considerable growth in its earnings. We also studied the latest analyst forecasts and found that the company's earnings growth is expected be similar to its current growth rate.
