Synoptics Technologies Limited's (NSE:SYNOPTICS) Stock Has Shown Weakness Lately But Financial Prospects Look Decent: Is The Market Wrong?

With its stock down 18% over the past week, it is easy to disregard Synoptics Technologies (NSE:SYNOPTICS). However, the company's fundamentals look pretty decent, and long-term financials are usually aligned with future market price movements. Particularly, we will be paying attention to Synoptics Technologies' ROE today.

Return on Equity or ROE is a test of how effectively a company is growing its value and managing investors’ money. In short, ROE shows the profit each dollar generates with respect to its shareholder investments.

How Do You Calculate Return On Equity?

The formula for ROE is:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Synoptics Technologies is:

5.8% = ₹40m ÷ ₹698m (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2025).

The 'return' is the profit over the last twelve months. That means that for every ₹1 worth of shareholders' equity, the company generated ₹0.06 in profit.

Why Is ROE Important For Earnings Growth?

Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. We now need to evaluate how much profit the company reinvests or "retains" for future growth which then gives us an idea about the growth potential of the company. Generally speaking, other things being equal, firms with a high return on equity and profit retention, have a higher growth rate than firms that don’t share these attributes.

Synoptics Technologies' Earnings Growth And 5.8% ROE

As you can see, Synoptics Technologies' ROE looks pretty weak. Even compared to the average industry ROE of 16%, the company's ROE is quite dismal. However, the moderate 14% net income growth seen by Synoptics Technologies over the past five years is definitely a positive. We believe that there might be other aspects that are positively influencing the company's earnings growth. For instance, the company has a low payout ratio or is being managed efficiently.

As a next step, we compared Synoptics Technologies' net income growth with the industry and were disappointed to see that the company's growth is lower than the industry average growth of 26% in the same period.

Earnings growth is a huge factor in stock valuation. What investors need to determine next is if the expected earnings growth, or the lack of it, is already built into the share price. By doing so, they will have an idea if the stock is headed into clear blue waters or if swampy waters await. Is Synoptics Technologies fairly valued compared to other companies? These 3 valuation measures might help you decide.

Is Synoptics Technologies Efficiently Re-investing Its Profits?

Synoptics Technologies doesn't pay any regular dividends, meaning that all of its profits are being reinvested in the business, which explains the fair bit of earnings growth the company has seen.

Conclusion

Overall, we feel that Synoptics Technologies certainly does have some positive factors to consider. Namely, its respectable earnings growth, which it achieved due to it retaining most of its profits. However, given the low ROE, investors may not be benefitting from all that reinvestment after all. While we won't completely dismiss the company, what we would do, is try to ascertain how risky the business is to make a more informed decision around the company. Leverage on its own is close to useless as a screen right now, because so much corporate debt was termed out at 2 to 3% and has not repriced. A business at three times leverage with nothing due until 2031 is in a completely different position from the same ratio rolling next year. Screen on weighted average maturity and the schedule behind it.
