Investing in Persistent Systems (NSE:PERSISTENT) five years ago would have delivered you a 739% gain

We think all investors should try to buy and hold high quality multi-year winners. And we've seen some truly amazing gains over the years. Don't believe it? Then look at the Persistent Systems Limited (NSE:PERSISTENT) share price. It's 706% higher than it was five years ago. This just goes to show the value creation that some businesses can achieve. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 11% gain in the last three months. Anyone who held for that rewarding ride would probably be keen to talk about it.

Now it's worth having a look at the company's fundamentals too, because that will help us determine if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During five years of share price growth, Persistent Systems achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 36% per year. This EPS growth is lower than the 52% average annual increase in the share price. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did five years ago. That's not necessarily surprising considering the five-year track record of earnings growth. This optimism is visible in its fairly high P/E ratio of 56.98.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Persistent Systems' TSR for the last 5 years was 739%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

Persistent Systems provided a TSR of 8.8% over the year (including dividends). That's fairly close to the broader market return. It has to be noted that the recent return falls short of the 53% shareholders have gained each year, over half a decade. Although the share price growth has slowed, the longer term story points to a business well worth watching. Before deciding if you like the current share price, check how Persistent Systems scores on these 3 valuation metrics.
