The total return for Sunteck Realty (NSE:SUNTECK) investors has risen faster than earnings growth over the last five years
It hasn't been the best quarter for Sunteck Realty Limited (NSE:SUNTECK) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 11% in that time. But the silver lining is the stock is up over five years. However we are not very impressed because the share price is only up 11%, less than the market return of 141%.
Although Sunteck Realty has shed ₹6.3b from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During the last half decade, Sunteck Realty became profitable. That would generally be considered a positive, so we'd hope to see the share price to rise.

We know that Sunteck Realty has improved its bottom line over the last three years, but what does the future have in store? This free interactive report on Sunteck Realty's balance sheet strength is a great place to start, if you want to investigate the stock further.
What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Sunteck Realty's TSR for the last 5 years was 13%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
Sunteck Realty shareholders are down 2.8% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 3.6%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 3%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. Is Sunteck Realty cheap compared to other companies? These 3 valuation measures might help you decide.
