There's Reason For Concern Over Vimta Labs Limited's (NSE:VIMTALABS) Massive 31% Price Jump
The Vimta Labs Limited (NSE:VIMTALABS) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 31%. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 12% is also fairly reasonable.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Vimta Labs' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 35x is worth a mention when the median P/E in India is similar at about 34x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/E without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.
For instance, Vimta Labs' receding earnings in recent times would have to be some food for thought. One possibility is that the P/E is moderate because investors think the company might still do enough to be in line with the broader market in the near future. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Vimta Labs' P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the market.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 15%. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 30% overall rise in EPS, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would probably welcome the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 25% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this information, we find it interesting that Vimta Labs is trading at a fairly similar P/E to the market. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited recent growth rates and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. Maintaining these prices will be difficult to achieve as a continuation of recent earnings trends is likely to weigh down the shares eventually.
The Key Takeaway
Vimta Labs' stock has a lot of momentum behind it lately, which has brought its P/E level with the market. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
Our examination of Vimta Labs revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't impacting its P/E as much as we would have predicted, given they look worse than current market expectations. Right now we are uncomfortable with the P/E as this earnings performance isn't likely to support a more positive sentiment for long. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
