It is not uncommon to see companies perform well in the years after insiders buy shares. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of examples of share prices declining precipitously after insiders have sold shares. So before you buy or sell Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (NSE:ZEEL), you may well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling.

What Is Insider Buying?

Most investors know that it is quite permissible for company leaders, such as directors of the board, to buy and sell stock in the company. However, most countries require that the company discloses such transactions to the market.

We would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing. But logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares. As Peter Lynch said, 'insiders might sell their shares for any number of reasons, but they buy them for only one: they think the price will rise'.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Zee Entertainment Enterprises

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Independent Director Manish Chokhani for ₹20m worth of shares, at about ₹200 per share. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at above the current price of ₹186. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. It is encouraging to see an insider paid above the current price for shares, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels. Manish Chokhani was the only individual insider to buy during the last year.

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. Our data isn't picking up on much insider ownership at Zee Entertainment Enterprises, though insiders do hold about ₹44m worth of shares.
