T.V. Today Network Limited (NSE:TVTODAY) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 17th of October to ₹8.50. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 3.6%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

T.V. Today Network Doesn't Earn Enough To Cover Its Payments

Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Before making this announcement, T.V. Today Network was paying out a fairly large proportion of earnings, and it wasn't generating positive free cash flows either. Generally, we think that this would be a risky long term practice.

If the company can't turn things around, EPS could fall by 15.5% over the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we believe the payout ratio could reach 117%, which could put the dividend under pressure if earnings don't start to improve.

Dividend Volatility

While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2014, the annual payment back then was ₹0.75, compared to the most recent full-year payment of ₹8.50. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 27% over that duration. Despite the rapid growth in the dividend over the past number of years, we have seen the payments go down the past as well, so that makes us cautious.

The Dividend Has Limited Growth Potential

Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. Over the past five years, it looks as though T.V. Today Network's EPS has declined at around 16% a year. This steep decline can indicate that the business is going through a tough time, which could constrain its ability to pay a larger dividend each year in the future.

The Dividend Could Prove To Be Unreliable

In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think T.V. Today Network's payments are rock solid. The track record isn't great, and the payments are a bit high to be considered sustainable. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach.
