There Are Reasons To Feel Uneasy About Info Edge (India)'s (NSE:NAUKRI) Returns On Capital
If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. Having said that, from a first glance at Info Edge (India) (NSE:NAUKRI) we aren't jumping out of our chairs at how returns are trending, but let's have a deeper look.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. To calculate this metric for Info Edge (India), this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.039 = ₹6.0b ÷ (₹167b - ₹13b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2023).
Thus, Info Edge (India) has an ROCE of 3.9%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Interactive Media and Services industry average of 13%.

How Are Returns Trending?
When we looked at the ROCE trend at Info Edge (India), we didn't gain much confidence. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 12% over the last five years. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
On a related note, Info Edge (India) has decreased its current liabilities to 8.1% of total assets. That could partly explain why the ROCE has dropped. What's more, this can reduce some aspects of risk to the business because now the company's suppliers or short-term creditors are funding less of its operations. Since the business is basically funding more of its operations with it's own money, you could argue this has made the business less efficient at generating ROCE.
The Bottom Line On Info Edge (India)'s ROCE
In summary, despite lower returns in the short term, we're encouraged to see that Info Edge (India) is reinvesting for growth and has higher sales as a result. And long term investors must be optimistic going forward because the stock has returned a huge 179% to shareholders in the last five years. So while investors seem to be recognizing these promising trends, we would look further into this stock to make sure the other metrics justify the positive view.
