Returns On Capital Signal Tricky Times Ahead For Info Edge (India) (NSE:NAUKRI)
If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. Although, when we looked at Info Edge (India) (NSE:NAUKRI), it didn't seem to tick all of these boxes.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Info Edge (India):
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.027 = ₹4.4b ÷ (₹174b - ₹12b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2022).
Thus, Info Edge (India) has an ROCE of 2.7%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Interactive Media and Services industry average of 14%.

The Trend Of ROCE
On the surface, the trend of ROCE at Info Edge (India) doesn't inspire confidence. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 11% over the last five years. Although, given both revenue and the amount of assets employed in the business have increased, it could suggest the company is investing in growth, and the extra capital has led to a short-term reduction in ROCE. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
On a side note, Info Edge (India) has done well to pay down its current liabilities to 7.2% of total assets. That could partly explain why the ROCE has dropped. Effectively this means their suppliers or short-term creditors are funding less of the business, which reduces some elements of risk. Some would claim this reduces the business' efficiency at generating ROCE since it is now funding more of the operations with its own money.
In Conclusion...
While returns have fallen for Info Edge (India) in recent times, we're encouraged to see that sales are growing and that the business is reinvesting in its operations. And long term investors must be optimistic going forward because the stock has returned a huge 232% to shareholders in the last five years. So while the underlying trends could already be accounted for by investors, we still think this stock is worth looking into further.
