VISA Steel Limited (NSE:VISASTEEL) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 28% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 81% in the last year.

Even after such a large jump in price, it would still be understandable if you think VISA Steel is a stock with good investment prospects with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 0.5x, considering almost half the companies in India's Metals and Mining industry have P/S ratios above 1.2x. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

What Does VISA Steel's Recent Performance Look Like?

We'd have to say that with no tangible growth over the last year, VISA Steel's revenue has been unimpressive. It might be that many expect the uninspiring revenue performance to worsen, which has repressed the P/S. Those who are bullish on VISA Steel will be hoping that this isn't the case, so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For VISA Steel?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as VISA Steel's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that there was hardly any revenue growth to speak of for the company over the past year. Whilst it's an improvement, it wasn't enough to get the company out of the hole it was in, with revenue down 32% overall from three years ago. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 14% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.

With this in mind, we understand why VISA Steel's P/S is lower than most of its industry peers. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

What Does VISA Steel's P/S Mean For Investors?

Despite VISA Steel's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

Our examination of VISA Steel confirms that the company's shrinking revenue over the past medium-term is a key factor in its low price-to-sales ratio, given the industry is projected to grow. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises either. Given the current circumstances, it seems unlikely that the share price will experience any significant movement in either direction in the near future if recent medium-term revenue trends persist.
