Need To Know: Star Cement Limited (NSE:STARCEMENT) Insiders Have Been Buying Shares
We've lost count of how many times insiders have accumulated shares in a company that goes on to improve markedly. The flip side of that is that there are more than a few examples of insiders dumping stock prior to a period of weak performance. So shareholders might well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Star Cement Limited (NSE:STARCEMENT).
Do Insider Transactions Matter?
It's quite normal to see company insiders, such as board members, trading in company stock, from time to time. However, most countries require that the company discloses such transactions to the market.
Insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing. But equally, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether. For example, a Columbia University study found that 'insiders are more likely to engage in open market purchases of their own company’s stock when the firm is about to reveal new agreements with customers and suppliers'.

Star Cement Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Chairman & MD Sajjan Bhajanka bought ₹7.2m worth of shares at a price of ₹90.79 per share. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at around the current price of ₹91.95. That means they have been optimistic about the company in the past, though they may have changed their mind. We do always like to see insider buying, but it is worth noting if those purchases were made at well below today's share price, as the discount to value may have narrowed with the rising price. In this case we're pleased to report that the insider purchases were made at close to current prices.
While Star Cement insiders bought shares during the last year, they didn't sell. Their average price was about ₹79.64. Although they bought at below the recent share price, it is good to see that insiders are willing to invest in the company. Insider Ownership
Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It's great to see that Star Cement insiders own 66% of the company, worth about ₹25b. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
