Slowing Rates Of Return At Ratnamani Metals & Tubes (NSE:RATNAMANI) Leave Little Room For Excitement
To find a multi-bagger stock, what are the underlying trends we should look for in a business? Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. That's why when we briefly looked at Ratnamani Metals & Tubes' (NSE:RATNAMANI) ROCE trend, we were pretty happy with what we saw.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. To calculate this metric for Ratnamani Metals & Tubes, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.19 = ₹4.6b ÷ (₹30b - ₹5.7b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2022).
So, Ratnamani Metals & Tubes has an ROCE of 19%. In absolute terms, that's a pretty normal return, and it's somewhat close to the Metals and Mining industry average of 16%.

While the past is not representative of the future, it can be helpful to know how a company has performed historically, which is why we have this chart above. If you want to delve into the historical earnings, revenue and cash flow of Ratnamani Metals & Tubes, check out these free graphs here.
How Are Returns Trending?
While the current returns on capital are decent, they haven't changed much. Over the past five years, ROCE has remained relatively flat at around 19% and the business has deployed 94% more capital into its operations. Since 19% is a moderate ROCE though, it's good to see a business can continue to reinvest at these decent rates of return. Over long periods of time, returns like these might not be too exciting, but with consistency they can pay off in terms of share price returns.
The Key Takeaway
In the end, Ratnamani Metals & Tubes has proven its ability to adequately reinvest capital at good rates of return. And the stock has done incredibly well with a 263% return over the last five years, so long term investors are no doubt ecstatic with that result. So even though the stock might be more "expensive" than it was before, we think the strong fundamentals warrant this stock for further research.
Like most companies, Ratnamani Metals & Tubes does come with some risks, and we've found 1 warning sign that you should be aware of.
