Optimism for Orient Ceratech (NSE:ORIENTCER) has grown this past week, despite five-year decline in earnings
When you buy a stock there is always a possibility that it could drop 100%. But on the bright side, you can make far more than 100% on a really good stock. For instance, the price of Orient Ceratech Limited (NSE:ORIENTCER) stock is up an impressive 199% over the last five years. Better yet, the share price has risen 12% in the last week. But this might be partly because the broader market had a good week last week, gaining 5.0%.
After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.
We've discovered 4 warning signs about Orient Ceratech. View them for free.In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During five years of share price growth, Orient Ceratech actually saw its EPS drop 12% per year.
Essentially, it doesn't seem likely that investors are focused on EPS. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.
We doubt the modest 0.7% dividend yield is attracting many buyers to the stock. The revenue reduction of 0.4% per year is not a positive. It certainly surprises us that the share price is up, but perhaps a closer examination of the data will yield answers.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Orient Ceratech, it has a TSR of 208% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Orient Ceratech shareholders are down 24% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 6.1%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 25% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Orient Ceratech better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 4 warning signs with Orient Ceratech (at least 1 which makes us a bit uncomfortable) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
