Market Might Still Lack Some Conviction On Jindal Stainless Limited (NSE:JSL) Even After 25% Share Price Boost
Jindal Stainless Limited (NSE:JSL) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 25% after a shaky period beforehand. But the gains over the last month weren't enough to make shareholders whole, as the share price is still down 8.9% in the last twelve months.
Even after such a large jump in price, given about half the companies in India have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 30x, you may still consider Jindal Stainless as an attractive investment with its 23.9x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.
Jindal Stainless hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining earnings compare poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth on average. It seems that many are expecting the dour earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Growth For Jindal Stainless?
In order to justify its P/E ratio, Jindal Stainless would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 7.7%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk EPS by 21% in aggregate. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 19% each year as estimated by the twelve analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 22% each year, which is not materially different.
In light of this, it's peculiar that Jindal Stainless' P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.

What We Can Learn From Jindal Stainless' P/E?
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Jindal Stainless' P/E close to the market median. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
Our examination of Jindal Stainless' analyst forecasts revealed that its market-matching earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E as much as we would have predicted. When we see an average earnings outlook with market-like growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/E ratio. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued, but investors seem to think future earnings could see some volatility.
