The Returns On Capital At Hi-Tech Pipes (NSE:HITECH) Don't Inspire Confidence
If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. Although, when we looked at Hi-Tech Pipes (NSE:HITECH), it didn't seem to tick all of these boxes.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. To calculate this metric for Hi-Tech Pipes, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.17 = ₹925m ÷ (₹9.2b - ₹3.8b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2023).
So, Hi-Tech Pipes has an ROCE of 17%. In absolute terms, that's a pretty normal return, and it's somewhat close to the Metals and Mining industry average of 14%.

So How Is Hi-Tech Pipes' ROCE Trending?
In terms of Hi-Tech Pipes' historical ROCE movements, the trend isn't fantastic. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 30% over the last five years. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
On a related note, Hi-Tech Pipes has decreased its current liabilities to 41% of total assets. That could partly explain why the ROCE has dropped. Effectively this means their suppliers or short-term creditors are funding less of the business, which reduces some elements of risk. Since the business is basically funding more of its operations with it's own money, you could argue this has made the business less efficient at generating ROCE. Keep in mind 41% is still pretty high, so those risks are still somewhat prevalent.
The Bottom Line
Even though returns on capital have fallen in the short term, we find it promising that revenue and capital employed have both increased for Hi-Tech Pipes. And the stock has done incredibly well with a 305% return over the last five years, so long term investors are no doubt ecstatic with that result. So while the underlying trends could already be accounted for by investors, we still think this stock is worth looking into further.
