Here's Why Fortis Healthcare (NSE:FORTIS) Has Caught The Eye Of Investors
Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.
So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Fortis Healthcare (NSE:FORTIS). While this doesn't necessarily speak to whether it's undervalued, the profitability of the business is enough to warrant some appreciation - especially if its growing.

How Fast Is Fortis Healthcare Growing Its Earnings Per Share?
In the last three years Fortis Healthcare's earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. So it would be better to isolate the growth rate over the last year for our analysis. It's good to see that Fortis Healthcare's EPS has grown from ₹5.88 to ₹6.77 over twelve months. That's a 15% gain; respectable growth in the broader scheme of things.
It's often helpful to take a look at earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. While we note Fortis Healthcare achieved similar EBIT margins to last year, revenue grew by a solid 12% to ₹59b. That's encouraging news for the company!

Are Fortis Healthcare Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
It should give investors a sense of security owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, creating a close alignment their interests. So it is good to see that Fortis Healthcare insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. To be specific, they have ₹2.7b worth of shares. This considerable investment should help drive long-term value in the business. Even though that's only about 1.2% of the company, it's enough money to indicate alignment between the leaders of the business and ordinary shareholders.
Is Fortis Healthcare Worth Keeping An Eye On?
One positive for Fortis Healthcare is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. If that's not enough on its own, there is also the rather notable levels of insider ownership. These two factors are a huge highlight for the company which should be a strong contender your watchlists. While we've looked at the quality of the earnings, we haven't yet done any work to value the stock. So if you like to buy cheap, you may want to check if Fortis Healthcare is trading on a high P/E or a low P/E, relative to its industry.
