For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.

If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Fortis Healthcare (NSE:FORTIS). While this doesn't necessarily speak to whether it's undervalued, the profitability of the business is enough to warrant some appreciation - especially if its growing.

Fortis Healthcare's Improving Profits

In the last three years Fortis Healthcare's earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. So it would be better to isolate the growth rate over the last year for our analysis. Fortis Healthcare boosted its trailing twelve month EPS from ₹4.41 to ₹5.48, in the last year. That's a 24% gain; respectable growth in the broader scheme of things.

Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. The good news is that Fortis Healthcare is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 2.4 percentage points to 13%, over the last year. Both of which are great metrics to check off for potential growth.

It's pleasing to see company leaders with putting their money on the line, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. Fortis Healthcare followers will find comfort in knowing that insiders have a significant amount of capital that aligns their best interests with the wider shareholder group. Given insiders own a significant chunk of shares, currently valued at ₹4.9b, they have plenty of motivation to push the business to succeed. That's certainly enough to let shareholders know that management will be very focussed on long term growth.

Is Fortis Healthcare Worth Keeping An Eye On?

One important encouraging feature of Fortis Healthcare is that it is growing profits. To add an extra spark to the fire, significant insider ownership in the company is another highlight.
