Godrej Agrovet's (NSE:GODREJAGRO) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year
Godrej Agrovet Limited (NSE:GODREJAGRO) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend on the 3rd of August to ₹9.50. This will take the dividend yield from 1.9% to 1.9%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

Godrej Agrovet's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. Based on the last payment, Godrej Agrovet's earnings were much higher than the dividend, but it wasn't converting those earnings into cash flow. In general, we consider cash flow to be more important than earnings, so we would be cautious about relying on the sustainability of this dividend.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 14.2%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 48% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.
Godrej Agrovet Is Still Building Its Track Record
Looking back, the dividend has been stable, but the company hasn't been paying a dividend for very long so we can't be confident that the dividend will remain stable through all economic environments. Since 2018, the dividend has gone from ₹4.50 to ₹9.50. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 21% a year over that time. It is always nice to see strong dividend growth, but with such a short payment history we wouldn't be inclined to rely on it until a longer track record can be developed.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. It's encouraging to see Godrej Agrovet has been growing its earnings per share at 11% a year over the past five years. The lack of cash flows does make us a bit cautious though, especially when it comes to the future of the dividend.
In Summary
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. While Godrej Agrovet is earning enough to cover the payments, the cash flows are lacking. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
