Tata Investment's (NSE:TATAINVEST) five-year total shareholder returns outpace the underlying earnings growth
Buying shares in the best businesses can build meaningful wealth for you and your family. And highest quality companies can see their share prices grow by huge amounts. Don't believe it? Then look at the Tata Investment Corporation Limited (NSE:TATAINVEST) share price. It's 665% higher than it was five years ago. And this is just one example of the epic gains achieved by some long term investors. It's down 7.1% in the last seven days. We love happy stories like this one. The company should be really proud of that performance!
Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 7.1%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Over half a decade, Tata Investment managed to grow its earnings per share at 27% a year. This EPS growth is lower than the 50% average annual increase in the share price. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth. This favorable sentiment is reflected in its (fairly optimistic) P/E ratio of 87.97.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Tata Investment, it has a TSR of 750% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that Tata Investment shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 45% over one year. Of course, that includes the dividend. However, the TSR over five years, coming in at 53% per year, is even more impressive. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for Tata Investment you should know about.
