GACM Technologies Limited's (NSE:GATECH) Shares Bounce 54% But Its Business Still Trails The Market
The GACM Technologies Limited (NSE:GATECH) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 54%. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 16% in the last twelve months.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, GACM Technologies' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 18.5x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in India, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 30x and even P/E's above 57x are quite common. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
GACM Technologies certainly has been doing a great job lately as it's been growing earnings at a really rapid pace. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings growth might actually underperform the broader market in the near future. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?
In order to justify its P/E ratio, GACM Technologies would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 130% last year. Although, its longer-term performance hasn't been as strong with three-year EPS growth being relatively non-existent overall. Therefore, it's fair to say that earnings growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.
Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 23% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.
In light of this, it's understandable that GACM Technologies' P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
The Final Word
Despite GACM Technologies' shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that GACM Technologies maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider market forecast, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
