Emkay Global Financial Services' (NSE:EMKAY) Upcoming Dividend Will Be Larger Than Last Year's

The board of Emkay Global Financial Services Limited (NSE:EMKAY) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of ₹1.25 on the 7th of September, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. Although the dividend is now higher, the yield is only 1.8%, which is below the industry average.

While the dividend yield is important for income investors, it is also important to consider any large share price moves, as this will generally outweigh any gains from distributions. Emkay Global Financial Services' stock price has reduced by 42% in the last 3 months, which is not ideal for investors and can explain a sharp increase in the dividend yield.

Emkay Global Financial Services' Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage

The dividend yield is a little bit low, but sustainability of the payments is also an important part of evaluating an income stock. However, prior to this announcement, Emkay Global Financial Services' dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.

Looking forward, earnings per share could rise by 22.5% over the next year if the trend from the last few years continues. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 7.5% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Dividend Volatility

The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least one cut in the last 10 years. Since 2012, the annual payment back then was ₹1.00, compared to the most recent full-year payment of ₹1.25. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 2.3% a year over that time. It's encouraging to see some dividend growth, but the dividend has been cut at least once, and the size of the cut would eliminate most of the growth anyway, which makes this less attractive as an income investment.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. Emkay Global Financial Services has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 22% per annum. A low payout ratio gives the company a lot of flexibility, and growing earnings also make it very easy for it to grow the dividend.

We Really Like Emkay Global Financial Services' Dividend

Overall, we think this could be an attractive income stock, and it is only getting better by paying a higher dividend this year. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
