BSE Limited (NSE:BSE) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 25% gain in the last month alone. The last month tops off a massive increase of 144% in the last year.

After such a large jump in price, BSE may be sending strong sell signals at present with a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 31.5x, when you consider almost half of the companies in the Capital Markets industry in India have P/S ratios under 7.4x and even P/S lower than 2x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/S.

How Has BSE Performed Recently?

BSE certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue more than most other companies. It seems the market expects this form will continue into the future, hence the elevated P/S ratio. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as steep as BSE's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry decidedly.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 119% gain to the company's top line. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 240% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 27% during the coming year according to the six analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 12% growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this in mind, it's not hard to understand why BSE's P/S is high relative to its industry peers. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

The Bottom Line On BSE's P/S

BSE's P/S has grown nicely over the last month thanks to a handy boost in the share price. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've established that BSE maintains its high P/S on the strength of its forecasted revenue growth being higher than the the rest of the Capital Markets industry, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in revenues is quite remote, justifying the elevated P/S ratio. Unless the analysts have really missed the mark, these strong revenue forecasts should keep the share price buoyant.

Having said that, be aware BSE is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 1 of those is a bit unpleasant.
