Chalet Hotels Insiders Sell ₹206m Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution
In the last year, many Chalet Hotels Limited (NSE:CHALET) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Chalet Hotels
In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the MD, CEO & Director, Sanjay Sethi, sold ₹195m worth of shares at a price of ₹550 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (₹822). As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. We note that the biggest single sale was 100% of Sanjay Sethi's holding.

Insiders At Chalet Hotels Have Sold Stock Recently
Over the last three months, we've seen a bit of insider selling at Chalet Hotels. insider Urvi Aradhya divested only ₹2.0m worth of shares in that time. It's not great to see insider selling, nor the lack of recent buyers. But the volume sold is so low that it really doesn't bother us.
Insider Ownership Of Chalet Hotels
I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Chalet Hotels insiders own about ₹23b worth of shares (which is 13% of the company). This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
What Might The Insider Transactions At Chalet Hotels Tell Us?
An insider hasn't bought Chalet Hotels stock in the last three months, but there was some selling. And even if we look at the last year, we didn't see any purchases. But since Chalet Hotels is profitable and growing, we're not too worried by this. The company boasts high insider ownership, but we're a little hesitant, given the history of share sales. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision. To help with this, we've discovered 2 warning signs (1 is concerning!) that you ought to be aware of before buying any shares in Chalet Hotels.
