Whirlpool of India Limited's (NSE:WHIRLPOOL) 29% Share Price Plunge Could Signal Some Risk

The Whirlpool of India Limited (NSE:WHIRLPOOL) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 29%. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 46% share price drop.

Although its price has dipped substantially, Whirlpool of India's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 35.9x might still make it look like a sell right now compared to the market in India, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 26x and even P/E's below 14x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/E.

Whirlpool of India certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the strong earnings performance to persist, which has raised the P/E. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Is There Enough Growth For Whirlpool of India?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Whirlpool of India would need to produce impressive growth in excess of the market.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 16%. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 35% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the eight analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 20% each year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 20% each year, which is not materially different.

In light of this, it's curious that Whirlpool of India's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Although, additional gains will be difficult to achieve as this level of earnings growth is likely to weigh down the share price eventually.

The Key Takeaway

Despite the recent share price weakness, Whirlpool of India's P/E remains higher than most other companies. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

Our examination of Whirlpool of India's analyst forecasts revealed that its market-matching earnings outlook isn't impacting its high P/E as much as we would have predicted. When we see an average earnings outlook with market-like growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. This places shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.
