Stock Analysis
The total return for Garware Technical Fibres (NSE:GARFIBRES) investors has risen faster than earnings growth over the last five years
When you buy a stock there is always a possibility that it could drop 100%. But on a lighter note, a good company can see its share price rise well over 100%. Long term Garware Technical Fibres Limited (NSE:GARFIBRES) shareholders would be well aware of this, since the stock is up 269% in five years. But it's down 5.7% in the last week. But this could be related to the soft market, with stocks selling off around 2.1% in the last week.
Although Garware Technical Fibres has shed ₹5.2b from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Over half a decade, Garware Technical Fibres managed to grow its earnings per share at 13% a year. This EPS growth is slower than the share price growth of 30% per year, over the same period. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Garware Technical Fibres the TSR over the last 5 years was 277%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that Garware Technical Fibres shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 28% over one year. That's including the dividend. However, the TSR over five years, coming in at 30% per year, is even more impressive. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Garware Technical Fibres better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk.
