Banswara Syntex (NSE:BANSWRAS) shareholders notch a 30% CAGR over 5 years, yet earnings have been shrinking

The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But on the bright side, you can make far more than 100% on a really good stock. Long term Banswara Syntex Limited (NSE:BANSWRAS) shareholders would be well aware of this, since the stock is up 257% in five years. Better yet, the share price has risen 10% in the last week.

The past week has proven to be lucrative for Banswara Syntex investors, so let's see if fundamentals drove the company's five-year performance.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During five years of share price growth, Banswara Syntex actually saw its EPS drop 12% per year.

This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Because earnings per share don't seem to match up with the share price, we'll take a look at other metrics instead.

The modest 0.7% dividend yield is unlikely to be propping up the share price. On the other hand, Banswara Syntex's revenue is growing nicely, at a compound rate of 4.8% over the last five years. It's quite possible that management are prioritizing revenue growth over EPS growth at the moment.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Banswara Syntex's TSR for the last 5 years was 278%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

Banswara Syntex shareholders are up 5.6% for the year (even including dividends). But that return falls short of the market. It's probably a good sign that the company has an even better long term track record, having provided shareholders with an annual TSR of 30% over five years. It may well be that this is a business worth popping on the watching, given the continuing positive reception, over time, from the market. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Even so, be aware that Banswara Syntex is showing 4 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those doesn't sit too well with us...
