Reliable Data Services Limited (NSE:RELIABLE) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 81% share price jump in the last month. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 82% in the last year.

Even after such a large jump in price, Reliable Data Services' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 23.3x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in India, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 34x and even P/E's above 65x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

Earnings have risen firmly for Reliable Data Services recently, which is pleasing to see. It might be that many expect the respectable earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Reliable Data Services' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow earnings per share by a handy 11% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 165% overall rise in EPS, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 26% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

With this information, we find it odd that Reliable Data Services is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Bottom Line On Reliable Data Services' P/E

Despite Reliable Data Services' shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that Reliable Data Services currently trades on a much lower than expected P/E since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider market forecast. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching this positive performance. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term earnings trends continue, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.
