Latent View Analytics Limited's (NSE:LATENTVIEW) 26% Share Price Plunge Could Signal Some Risk
To the annoyance of some shareholders, Latent View Analytics Limited (NSE:LATENTVIEW) shares are down a considerable 26% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. Longer-term shareholders will rue the drop in the share price, since it's now virtually flat for the year after a promising few quarters.
Even after such a large drop in price, Latent View Analytics' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 63x might still make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in India, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 20x and even P/E's below 10x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
With earnings growth that's exceedingly strong of late, Latent View Analytics has been doing very well. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings growth will be enough to outperform the broader market in the near future. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Latent View Analytics would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 36% gain to the company's bottom line. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 69% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 24% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
In light of this, it's alarming that Latent View Analytics' P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited recent growth rates and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent earnings trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
The Final Word
Latent View Analytics' shares may have retreated, but its P/E is still flying high. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Our examination of Latent View Analytics revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look worse than current market expectations. When we see weak earnings with slower than market growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
It is also worth noting that we have found 3 warning signs for Latent View Analytics that you need to take into consideration.
