BLS International Services Limited's (NSE:BLS) Share Price Is Still Matching Investor Opinion Despite 26% Slump
BLS International Services Limited (NSE:BLS) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 26% share price drop in the last month. To make matters worse, the recent drop has wiped out a year's worth of gains with the share price now back where it started a year ago.
Although its price has dipped substantially, given around half the companies in India have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 25x, you may still consider BLS International Services as a stock to potentially avoid with its 29.6x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.
With earnings growth that's exceedingly strong of late, BLS International Services has been doing very well. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings growth will be enough to outperform the broader market in the near future. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

How Is BLS International Services' Growth Trending?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as high as BLS International Services' is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 50%. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 362% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 25% shows it's noticeably more attractive on an annualised basis.
In light of this, it's understandable that BLS International Services' P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Presumably shareholders aren't keen to offload something they believe will continue to outmanoeuvre the bourse.
The Key Takeaway
Despite the recent share price weakness, BLS International Services' P/E remains higher than most other companies. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
As we suspected, our examination of BLS International Services revealed its three-year earnings trends are contributing to its high P/E, given they look better than current market expectations. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 1 warning sign for BLS International Services that you need to be mindful of.
