BLS International Services Limited (NSE:BLS) Stocks Shoot Up 25% But Its P/E Still Looks Reasonable
The BLS International Services Limited (NSE:BLS) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 25%. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 60% in the last year.
After such a large jump in price, BLS International Services' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 47.8x might make it look like a sell right now compared to the market in India, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 33x and even P/E's below 19x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/E.
With earnings growth that's exceedingly strong of late, BLS International Services has been doing very well. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings growth will be enough to outperform the broader market in the near future. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as high as BLS International Services' is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 56% gain to the company's bottom line. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 394% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 26% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
In light of this, it's understandable that BLS International Services' P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong growth to continue and are willing to pay more for the stock.
What We Can Learn From BLS International Services' P/E?
BLS International Services' P/E is getting right up there since its shares have risen strongly. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
As we suspected, our examination of BLS International Services revealed its three-year earnings trends are contributing to its high P/E, given they look better than current market expectations. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident earnings aren't under threat. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
