Here's Why I Think Somi Conveyor Beltings (NSE:SOMICONVEY) Might Deserve Your Attention Today

Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'

In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Somi Conveyor Beltings (NSE:SOMICONVEY). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Quickly Is Somi Conveyor Beltings Increasing Earnings Per Share?

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price will eventually follow. That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. I, for one, am blown away by the fact that Somi Conveyor Beltings has grown EPS by 55% per year, over the last three years. Growth that fast may well be fleeting, but like a lotus blooming from a murky pond, it sparks joy for the wary stock pickers.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Somi Conveyor Beltings's EBIT margins have actually improved by 11.7 percentage points in the last year, to reach 20%, but, on the flip side, revenue was down 41%. That falls short of ideal.

Somi Conveyor Beltings isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of ₹706m. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.

Are Somi Conveyor Beltings Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Personally, I like to see high insider ownership of a company, since it suggests that it will be managed in the interests of shareholders. So we're pleased to report that Somi Conveyor Beltings insiders own a meaningful share of the business. Indeed, with a collective holding of 63%, company insiders are in control and have plenty of capital behind the venture. This makes me think they will be incentivised to plan for the long term - something I like to see. Of course, Somi Conveyor Beltings is a very small company, with a market cap of only ₹706m. That means insiders only have ₹447m worth of shares, despite the large proportional holding. That's not a huge stake in absolute terms, but it should help keep insiders aligned with other shareholders.

It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? Well, based on the CEO pay, I'd say they are indeed. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Somi Conveyor Beltings with market caps under ₹15b is about ₹3.0m.

The Somi Conveyor Beltings CEO received total compensation of only ₹1.9m in the year to . You could consider this pay as somewhat symbolic, which suggests the CEO does not need a lot of compensation to stay motivated. While the level of CEO compensation isn't a huge factor in my view of the company, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.

Does Somi Conveyor Beltings Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

Somi Conveyor Beltings's earnings per share have taken off like a rocket aimed right at the moon. The sweetener is that insiders have a mountain of stock, and the CEO remuneration is quite reasonable. The strong EPS improvement suggests the businesses is humming along. Somi Conveyor Beltings certainly ticks a few of my boxes, so I think it's probably well worth further consideration.
