Despite the downward trend in earnings at SEPC (NSE:SEPC) the stock rallies 12%, bringing five-year gains to 477%
Buying shares in the best businesses can build meaningful wealth for you and your family. And we've seen some truly amazing gains over the years. Don't believe it? Then look at the SEPC Limited (NSE:SEPC) share price. It's 449% higher than it was five years ago. And this is just one example of the epic gains achieved by some long term investors. It's even up 12% in the last week.
The past week has proven to be lucrative for SEPC investors, so let's see if fundamentals drove the company's five-year performance.
We've discovered 1 warning sign about SEPC. View them for free.We don't think that SEPC's modest trailing twelve month profit has the market's full attention at the moment. We think revenue is probably a better guide. Generally speaking, we'd consider a stock like this alongside loss-making companies, simply because the quantum of the profit is so low. It would be hard to believe in a more profitable future without growing revenues.
Over the last half decade SEPC's revenue has actually been trending down at about 17% per year. So it's pretty surprising to see that the share price is up 41% per year. There can be no doubt this kind of decoupling of revenue growth and share price growth is unusual to see in loss making companies. I think it's fair to say there is probably a fair bit of excitement in the price.

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
Investors should note that there's a difference between SEPC's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. We note that SEPC's TSR, at 477% is higher than its share price return of 449%. When you consider it hasn't been paying a dividend, this data suggests shareholders have benefitted from a spin-off, or had the opportunity to acquire attractively priced shares in a discounted capital raising.
A Different Perspective
SEPC shareholders are down 18% for the year, but the market itself is up 5.2%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 42%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
