It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Rajnandini Metal (NSE:RAJMET), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

Rajnandini Metal's Improving Profits

In business, though not in life, profits are a key measure of success; and share prices tend to reflect earnings per share (EPS). So like a ray of sunshine through a gap in the clouds, improving EPS is considered a good sign. You can imagine, then, that it almost knocked my socks off when I realized that Rajnandini Metal grew its EPS from ₹1.03 to ₹4.69, in one short year. Even though that growth rate is unlikely to be repeated, that looks like a breakout improvement. Could this be a sign that the business has reached an inflection point?

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Rajnandini Metal maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 324% to ₹7.6b. That's a real positive.

Rajnandini Metal isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of ₹2.5b. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.

Are Rajnandini Metal Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Personally, I like to see high insider ownership of a company, since it suggests that it will be managed in the interests of shareholders. So as you can imagine, the fact that Rajnandini Metal insiders own a significant number of shares certainly appeals to me. In fact, they own 96% of the company, so they will share in the same delights and challenges experienced by the ordinary shareholders. To me this is a good sign because it suggests they will be incentivised to build value for shareholders over the long term. In terms of absolute value, insiders have ₹2.4b invested in the business, using the current share price. That should be more than enough to keep them focussed on creating shareholder value!

Should You Add Rajnandini Metal To Your Watchlist?

Rajnandini Metal's earnings have taken off like any random crypto-currency did, back in 2017. That EPS growth certainly has my attention, and the large insider ownership only serves to further stoke my interest. The hope is, of course, that the strong growth marks a fundamental improvement in the business economics. So yes, on this short analysis I do think it's worth considering Rajnandini Metal for a spot on your watchlist. Even so, be aware that Rajnandini Metal is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those can't be ignored...

Although Rajnandini Metal certainly looks good to me, I would like it more if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see insider buying, too, then this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying, could be exactly what you're looking for.
