Om Infra (NSE:OMINFRAL) Has Announced That Its Dividend Will Be Reduced To ₹0.25
Om Infra Limited's (NSE:OMINFRAL) dividend is being reduced from last year's payment covering the same period to ₹0.25 on the 28th of October. This means that the dividend yield is 0.7%, which is a bit low when comparing to other companies in the industry.

Om Infra's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
It would be nice for the yield to be higher, but we should also check if higher levels of dividend payment would be sustainable. However, prior to this announcement, Om Infra's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.
Over the next year, EPS could expand by 1.3% if recent trends continue. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 17%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
Om Infra's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
Om Infra has been paying dividends for a while, but the track record isn't stellar. This makes us cautious about the consistency of the dividend over a full economic cycle. Since 2013, the dividend has gone from ₹0.10 total annually to ₹0.25. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 11% per annum over that time. Despite the rapid growth in the dividend over the past number of years, we have seen the payments go down the past as well, so that makes us cautious.
The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. Unfortunately, Om Infra's earnings per share has been essentially flat over the past five years, which means the dividend may not be increased each year. While growth may be thin on the ground, Om Infra could always pay out a higher proportion of earnings to increase shareholder returns.
In Summary
Overall, while it's not great to see that the dividend has been cut, we think the company is now in a good position to make consistent payments going into the future. The dividend has been at reasonable levels historically, but that hasn't translated into a consistent payment. The payment isn't stellar, but it could make a decent addition to a dividend portfolio.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
