Indo National's (NSE:NIPPOBATRY) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year
Indo National Limited (NSE:NIPPOBATRY) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend on the 29th of October to ₹25.00. This takes the dividend yield from 2.6% to 2.6%, which shareholders will be pleased with.

Indo National's Earnings Easily Cover the Distributions
We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. Before making this announcement, Indo National was paying a whopping 259% as a dividend, but this only made up 31% of its overall earnings. A cash payout ratio this high could put the dividend under pressure and force the company to reduce it in the future if it were to run into tough times.
Looking forward, earnings per share could rise by 16.4% over the next year if the trend from the last few years continues. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 25% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from ₹20.00 in 2011 to the most recent annual payment of ₹25.00. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 2.3% over that duration. The dividend has seen some fluctuations in the past, so even though the dividend was raised this year, we should remember that it has been cut in the past.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. It's encouraging to see Indo National has been growing its earnings per share at 16% a year over the past five years. A low payout ratio and decent growth suggests that the company is reinvesting well, and it also has plenty of room to increase the dividend over time.
In Summary
In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think Indo National's payments are rock solid. With cash flows lacking, it is difficult to see how the company can sustain a dividend payment. We don't think Indo National is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
