The board of Havells India Limited (NSE:HAVELLS) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of ₹6.00 on the 28th of July, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 0.5%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

Havells India's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings

A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. The last dividend was quite easily covered by Havells India's earnings. This indicates that a lot of the earnings are being reinvested into the business, with the aim of fueling growth.

Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 85.9% over the next year. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 27% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Dividend Volatility

Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2014, the annual payment back then was ₹1.00, compared to the most recent full-year payment of ₹9.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 25% a year over that time. Despite the rapid growth in the dividend over the past number of years, we have seen the payments go down the past as well, so that makes us cautious.

Havells India Could Grow Its Dividend

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. Havells India has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 10.0% per annum. Shareholders are getting plenty of the earnings returned to them, which combined with strong growth makes this quite appealing.

Havells India Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock

Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that Havells India is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. Distributions are quite easily covered by earnings, which are also being converted to cash flows. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
