Gujarat Apollo Industries' (NSE:GUJAPOLLO) Shareholders Have More To Worry About Than Lackluster Earnings

Operating Revenue Or Not?
Most companies divide classify their revenue as either 'operating revenue', which comes from normal operations, and other revenue, which could include government grants, for example. Where possible, we prefer rely on operating revenue to get a better understanding of how the business is functioning. However, we note that when non-operating revenue increases suddenly, it will sometimes generate an unsustainable boost to profit. It's worth noting that Gujarat Apollo Industries saw a big increase in non-operating revenue over the last year. Indeed, its non-operating revenue rose from ₹201.1m last year to ₹240.8m this year. The high levels of non-operating revenue are problematic because if (and when) they do not repeat, then overall revenue (and profitability) of the firm will fall. In order to better understand a company's profit result, it can sometimes help to consider whether the result would be very different without a sudden increase in non-operating revenue.

The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit
Alongside that spike in non-operating revenue, it's also important to note that Gujarat Apollo Industries'profit was boosted by unusual items worth ₹11m in the last twelve months. While it's always nice to have higher profit, a large contribution from unusual items sometimes dampens our enthusiasm. When we crunched the numbers on thousands of publicly listed companies, we found that a boost from unusual items in a given year is often not repeated the next year. Which is hardly surprising, given the name. Assuming those unusual items don't show up again in the current year, we'd thus expect profit to be weaker next year (in the absence of business growth, that is).
Our Take On Gujarat Apollo Industries' Profit Performance
In its last report Gujarat Apollo Industries benefitted from a spike in non-operating revenue which may have boosted its profit in a way that may be no more sustainable than low quality coal mining. Furthermore, unusual items also made a nice positive contribution to its profit, which may well drop next year (all else being equal) if these phenomena are not repeated. For the reasons mentioned above, we think that a perfunctory glance at Gujarat Apollo Industries' statutory profits might make it look better than it really is on an underlying level. Keep in mind, when it comes to analysing a stock it's worth noting the risks involved. Be aware that Gujarat Apollo Industries is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis and 1 of those is potentially serious...
