The board of Canara Bank (NSE:CANBK) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of ₹12.00 on the 28th of July, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This will take the annual payment to 2.2% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.

Canara Bank's Payment Expected To Have Solid Earnings Coverage

Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained.

Canara Bank has a long history of paying out dividends, with its current track record at a minimum of 10 years. While past data isn't a guarantee for the future, Canara Bank's latest earnings report puts its payout ratio at 19%, showing that the company can pay out its dividends comfortably.

If the trend of the last few years continues, EPS will grow by 65.5% over the next 12 months. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the future payout ratio will be 22%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

Dividend Volatility

The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least one cut in the last 10 years. Since 2013, the annual payment back then was ₹11.00, compared to the most recent full-year payment of ₹6.50. Doing the maths, this is a decline of about 5.1% per year. Generally, we don't like to see a dividend that has been declining over time as this can degrade shareholders' returns and indicate that the company may be running into problems.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

Given that the track record hasn't been stellar, we really want to see earnings per share growing over time. Canara Bank has impressed us by growing EPS at 65% per year over the past five years. Rapid earnings growth and a low payout ratio suggest this company has been effectively reinvesting in its business. Should that continue, this company could have a bright future.

Canara Bank Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock

Overall, we think this could be an attractive income stock, and it is only getting better by paying a higher dividend this year. Distributions are quite easily covered by earnings, which are also being converted to cash flows. Taking this all into consideration, this looks like it could be a good dividend opportunity.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
