If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. However, after briefly looking over the numbers, we don't think UNO Minda (NSE:UNOMINDA) has the makings of a multi-bagger going forward, but let's have a look at why that may be.

Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)

If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for UNO Minda:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.13 = ₹6.0b ÷ (₹68b - ₹23b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2022).

Therefore, UNO Minda has an ROCE of 13%. That's a relatively normal return on capital, and it's around the 12% generated by the Auto Components industry.

So How Is UNO Minda's ROCE Trending?

In terms of UNO Minda's historical ROCE movements, the trend isn't fantastic. Over the last five years, returns on capital have decreased to 13% from 18% five years ago. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. And if the increased capital generates additional returns, the business, and thus shareholders, will benefit in the long run.

The Bottom Line

Even though returns on capital have fallen in the short term, we find it promising that revenue and capital employed have both increased for UNO Minda. And long term investors must be optimistic going forward because the stock has returned a huge 334% to shareholders in the last five years. So while investors seem to be recognizing these promising trends, we would look further into this stock to make sure the other metrics justify the positive view.

On a final note, we've found 1 warning sign for UNO Minda that we think you should be aware of.
