Declining Stock and Decent Financials: Is The Market Wrong About Sundram Fasteners Limited (NSE:SUNDRMFAST)?

It is hard to get excited after looking at Sundram Fasteners' (NSE:SUNDRMFAST) recent performance, when its stock has declined 2.8% over the past three months. But if you pay close attention, you might find that its key financial indicators look quite decent, which could mean that the stock could potentially rise in the long-term given how markets usually reward more resilient long-term fundamentals. Particularly, we will be paying attention to Sundram Fasteners' ROE today.

ROE or return on equity is a useful tool to assess how effectively a company can generate returns on the investment it received from its shareholders. In short, ROE shows the profit each dollar generates with respect to its shareholder investments.

How Is ROE Calculated?

Return on equity can be calculated by using the formula:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Sundram Fasteners is:

14% = ₹5.5b ÷ ₹38b (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2025).

The 'return' refers to a company's earnings over the last year. One way to conceptualize this is that for each ₹1 of shareholders' capital it has, the company made ₹0.14 in profit.

Why Is ROE Important For Earnings Growth?

So far, we've learned that ROE is a measure of a company's profitability. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or "retain", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits. Assuming everything else remains unchanged, the higher the ROE and profit retention, the higher the growth rate of a company compared to companies that don't necessarily bear these characteristics.

A Side By Side comparison of Sundram Fasteners' Earnings Growth And 14% ROE

At first glance, Sundram Fasteners' ROE doesn't look very promising. However, the fact that the its ROE is quite higher to the industry average of 11% doesn't go unnoticed by us. Consequently, this likely laid the ground for the decent growth of 11% seen over the past five years by Sundram Fasteners. Bear in mind, the company does have a moderately low ROE. It is just that the industry ROE is lower. Hence there might be some other aspects that are causing earnings to grow. For example, it is possible that the broader industry is going through a high growth phase, or that the company has a low payout ratio.

Next, on comparing with the industry net income growth, we found that Sundram Fasteners' reported growth was lower than the industry growth of 28% over the last few years, which is not something we like to see.
