OPC Energy's (TLV:OPCE) earnings growth rate lags the 14% CAGR delivered to shareholders
OPC Energy Ltd. (TLV:OPCE) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 29% in the last quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last five years have been pleasing. It has returned a market beating 54% in that time.
In light of the stock dropping 4.9% in the past week, we want to investigate the longer term story, and see if fundamentals have been the driver of the company's positive five-year return.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During the five years of share price growth, OPC Energy moved from a loss to profitability. That's generally thought to be a genuine positive, so we would expect to see an increasing share price.

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
We've already covered OPC Energy's share price action, but we should also mention its total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. OPC Energy hasn't been paying dividends, but its TSR of 94% exceeds its share price return of 54%, implying it has either spun-off a business, or raised capital at a discount; thereby providing additional value to shareholders.
A Different Perspective
OPC Energy shareholders are down 25% over twelve months, which isn't far from the market return of -25%. The silver lining is that longer term investors would have made a total return of 14% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data remains strong, and the share price is simply down on sentiment, then this could be an opportunity worth investigating. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Take risks, for example - OPC Energy has 2 warning signs we think you should be aware of.
