We Don’t Think Skyline Investments' (TLV:SKLN) Earnings Should Make Shareholders Too Comfortable

How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?
Importantly, our data indicates that Skyline Investments' profit received a boost of CA$28m in unusual items, over the last year. While it's always nice to have higher profit, a large contribution from unusual items sometimes dampens our enthusiasm. When we analysed the vast majority of listed companies worldwide, we found that significant unusual items are often not repeated. Which is hardly surprising, given the name. Skyline Investments had a rather significant contribution from unusual items relative to its profit to September 2021. All else being equal, this would likely have the effect of making the statutory profit a poor guide to underlying earnings power.

An Unusual Tax Situation
Just as we noted the unusual items, we must inform you that Skyline Investments received a tax benefit which contributed CA$7.6m to the bottom line. It's always a bit noteworthy when a company is paid by the tax man, rather than paying the tax man. The receipt of a tax benefit is obviously a good thing, on its own. And since it previously lost money, it may well simply indicate the realisation of past tax losses. However, the devil in the detail is that these kind of benefits only impact in the year they are booked, and are often one-off in nature. Assuming the tax benefit is not repeated every year, we could see its profitability drop noticeably, all else being equal.
Our Take On Skyline Investments' Profit Performance
In its last report Skyline Investments received a tax benefit which might make its profit look better than it really is on a underlying level. Furthermore, it also benefitted from a positive unusual item, which boosted the profit result even higher. On reflection, the above-mentioned factors give us the strong impression that Skyline Investments'underlying earnings power is not as good as it might seem, based on the statutory profit numbers. So while earnings quality is important, it's equally important to consider the risks facing Skyline Investments at this point in time.
