The total return for Maslavi Construction (TLV:MSLA) investors has risen faster than earnings growth over the last five years
Maslavi Construction Company Ltd (TLV:MSLA) shareholders have seen the share price descend 14% over the month. But that doesn't change the fact that shareholders have received really good returns over the last five years. In fact, the share price is 215% higher today. We think it's more important to dwell on the long term returns than the short term returns. The more important question is whether the stock is too cheap or too expensive today.
Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 10%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.
There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Over half a decade, Maslavi Construction managed to grow its earnings per share at 25% a year. This EPS growth is remarkably close to the 26% average annual increase in the share price. Therefore one could conclude that sentiment towards the shares hasn't morphed very much. In fact, the share price seems to largely reflect the EPS growth.
The company's earnings per share (over time) is depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Maslavi Construction, it has a TSR of 256% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
Maslavi Construction shareholders are up 17% for the year (even including dividends). But that return falls short of the market. On the bright side, the longer term returns (running at about 29% a year, over half a decade) look better. It may well be that this is a business worth popping on the watching, given the continuing positive reception, over time, from the market. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Even so, be aware that Maslavi Construction is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 2 of those are a bit concerning...
