Avrot Industries Ltd's (TLV:AVRT) Shares Climb 29% But Its Business Is Yet to Catch Up
Avrot Industries Ltd (TLV:AVRT) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 29% after a shaky period beforehand. Longer-term shareholders would be thankful for the recovery in the share price since it's now virtually flat for the year after the recent bounce.
After such a large jump in price, when almost half of the companies in Israel's Commercial Services industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 0.9x, you may consider Avrot Industries as a stock probably not worth researching with its 1.7x P/S ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/S.

How Has Avrot Industries Performed Recently?
For example, consider that Avrot Industries' financial performance has been pretty ordinary lately as revenue growth is non-existent. Perhaps the market believes that revenue growth will improve markedly over current levels, inflating the P/S ratio. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should outperform the industry for P/S ratios like Avrot Industries' to be considered reasonable.
If we review the last year of revenue, the company posted a result that saw barely any deviation from a year ago. Regardless, revenue has managed to lift by a handy 8.2% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Comparing the recent medium-term revenue trends against the industry's one-year growth forecast of 20% shows it's noticeably less attractive.
With this information, we find it concerning that Avrot Industries is trading at a P/S higher than the industry. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.
What Does Avrot Industries' P/S Mean For Investors?
Avrot Industries' P/S is on the rise since its shares have risen strongly. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
The fact that Avrot Industries currently trades on a higher P/S relative to the industry is an oddity, since its recent three-year growth is lower than the wider industry forecast. When we see slower than industry revenue growth but an elevated P/S, there's considerable risk of the share price declining, sending the P/S lower. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these the share price as being reasonable.
