China Gas Holdings (HKG:384) Has Re-Affirmed Its Dividend Of HK$0.10
China Gas Holdings Limited (HKG:384) has announced that it will pay a dividend of HK$0.10 per share on the 28th of January. This makes the dividend yield 4.1%, which will augment investor returns quite nicely.
While the dividend yield is important for income investors, it is also important to consider any large share price moves, as this will generally outweigh any gains from distributions. China Gas Holdings' stock price has reduced by 42% in the last 3 months, which is not ideal for investors and can explain a sharp increase in the dividend yield.

China Gas Holdings' Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. Before making this announcement, China Gas Holdings was paying a whopping 2,022% as a dividend, but this only made up 31% of its overall earnings. A cash payout ratio this high could put the dividend under pressure and force the company to reduce it in the future if it were to run into tough times.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 15.0%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 33% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
China Gas Holdings Has A Solid Track Record
The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. Since 2011, the dividend has gone from HK$0.022 to HK$0.55. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 38% a year over that time. Rapidly growing dividends for a long time is a very valuable feature for an income stock.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. It's encouraging to see China Gas Holdings has been growing its earnings per share at 26% a year over the past five years. Earnings have been growing rapidly, and with a low payout ratio we think that the company could turn out to be a great dividend stock.
In Summary
Overall, it's nice to see a consistent dividend payment, but we think that longer term, the current level of payment might be unsustainable. While China Gas Holdings is earning enough to cover the payments, the cash flows are lacking. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
