Air China Limited (HKG:753) Might Not Be As Mispriced As It Looks

It's not a stretch to say that Air China Limited's (HKG:753) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.6x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" for companies in the Airlines industry in Hong Kong, where the median P/S ratio is around 0.9x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Air China Has Been Performing

With revenue growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Air China has been doing relatively well. Perhaps the market is expecting this level of performance to taper off, keeping the P/S from soaring. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

Is There Some Revenue Growth Forecasted For Air China?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Air China's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 97% last year. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 43% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 16% each year over the next three years. With the industry only predicted to deliver 11% per year, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.

In light of this, it's curious that Air China's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are skeptical of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.

The Final Word

Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Looking at Air China's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't giving the boost to its P/S that we would've expected. Perhaps uncertainty in the revenue forecasts are what's keeping the P/S ratio consistent with the rest of the industry. However, if you agree with the analysts' forecasts, you may be able to pick up the stock at an attractive price.
