Shareholders 8.1% loss in CITIC Telecom International Holdings (HKG:1883) partly attributable to the company's decline in earnings over past year
It's easy to match the overall market return by buying an index fund. But if you buy individual stocks, you can do both better or worse than that. Investors in CITIC Telecom International Holdings Limited (HKG:1883) have tasted that bitter downside in the last year, as the share price dropped 17%. That contrasts poorly with the market return of 35%. Even if shareholders bought some time ago, they wouldn't be particularly happy: the stock is down 16% in three years.
The recent uptick of 5.4% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a look at historical fundamentals.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Unhappily, CITIC Telecom International Holdings had to report a 28% decline in EPS over the last year. This fall in the EPS is significantly worse than the 17% the share price fall. So despite the weak per-share profits, some investors are probably relieved the situation wasn't more difficult.
You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of CITIC Telecom International Holdings, it has a TSR of -8.1% for the last 1 year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
While the broader market gained around 35% in the last year, CITIC Telecom International Holdings shareholders lost 8.1% (even including dividends). However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 5% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
