As an investor, mistakes are inevitable. But you have a problem if you face massive losses more than once in a while. So spare a thought for the long term shareholders of IRICO Group New Energy Company Limited (HKG:438); the share price is down a whopping 86% in the last three years. That would certainly shake our confidence in the decision to own the stock. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 22% in the last three months. While a drop like that is definitely a body blow, money isn't as important as health and happiness.

With the stock having lost 12% in the past week, it's worth taking a look at business performance and seeing if there's any red flags.

IRICO Group New Energy isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

Over three years, IRICO Group New Energy grew revenue at 18% per year. That's a fairly respectable growth rate. So it's hard to believe the share price decline of 23% per year is due to the revenue. It could be that the losses were much larger than expected. If you buy into companies that lose money then you always risk losing money yourself. Just don't lose the lesson.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 31% in the last year, IRICO Group New Energy shareholders lost 13%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, longer term shareholders are suffering worse, given the loss of 12% doled out over the last five years. We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
