Shareholders 59% loss in Lifestyle China Group (HKG:2136) partly attributable to the company's decline in earnings over past five years

It is a pleasure to report that the Lifestyle China Group Limited (HKG:2136) is up 48% in the last quarter. But don't envy holders -- looking back over 5 years the returns have been really bad. The share price has failed to impress anyone , down a sizable 59% during that time. So is the recent increase sufficient to restore confidence in the stock? Not yet. But it could be that the fall was overdone.

Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last five years, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During the five years over which the share price declined, Lifestyle China Group's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 65% each year. The impact of extraordinary items helps explain this. The share price decline of 16% per year isn't as bad as the EPS decline. So investors might expect EPS to bounce back -- or they may have previously foreseen the EPS decline. The high P/E ratio of 724.70 suggests that shareholders believe earnings will grow in the years ahead.

A Different Perspective

Lifestyle China Group provided a TSR of 20% over the last twelve months. But that return falls short of the market. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it is certainly better than the yearly loss of about 10% endured over half a decade. It could well be that the business is stabilizing. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Lifestyle China Group better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with Lifestyle China Group (at least 1 which is significant) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
