Emperor International Holdings' Distributions May Be Difficult To Sustain
The dividend yield is a little bit low, but sustainability of the payments is also an important part of evaluating an income stock. Even though Emperor International Holdings isn't generating a profit, it is generating healthy free cash flows that easily cover the dividend. In general, cash flows are more important than the more traditional measures of profit so we feel pretty comfortable with the dividend at this level.
Over the next year, EPS might fall by 55.2% based on recent performance. While this means that the company will be unprofitable, we generally believe cash flows are more important, and the current cash payout ratio is quite healthy, which gives us comfort.
Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2012, the dividend has gone from HK$0.093 to HK$0.032. The dividend has fallen 66% over that period. Declining dividends isn't generally what we look for as they can indicate that the company is running into some challenges.
Dividend Growth Potential Is Shaky
Dividends have been going in the wrong direction, so we definitely want to see a different trend in the earnings per share. Over the past five years, it looks as though Emperor International Holdings' EPS has declined at around 55% a year. Dividend payments are likely to come under some pressure unless EPS can pull out of the nosedive it is in.
Emperor International Holdings' Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable
In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think Emperor International Holdings' payments are rock solid. The company is generating plenty of cash, which could maintain the dividend for a while, but the track record hasn't been great. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
